ABOUT OUR PROJECTS

Our Mission

Giving hope together – education, health and a future for all!

We have been building a holistic educational and social initiative in Kenya since March 2022. Our core is our own school with an attached library, a safe place where children not only learn to read, write, and count, but also develop self-confidence, curiosity, and future prospects.

But for us, education doesn't end in the classroom: With environmental initiatives like beach and street cleanups and mangrove reforestation, we promote active climate and nature conservation. In our Women's Empowerment Program, we accompany women on their path to economic independence – through training, community, and targeted support.

Another milestone is the New Roots Medical Center, which provides free primary healthcare to the entire community – regardless of income, gender, or background.

All of this can only be achieved with the support of a strong community. Because we know that the major challenges of our time, from child poverty to the climate crisis, cannot be solved alone. But together we can make a difference. Every story counts. The future of every child is a priority. Become part of our movement and help us shape a diverse world full of education, health, justice, and hope.

Our Team in Watamu

Kennedy Kamau - Our Engine The man who was there from the start, the local project manager, and above all, our friend. Kennedy, a former street boy who later found support at the Children's Hope Home orphanage in a suburb of Nairobi, heads the New Roots project and spearheads our mission in Watamu. A founding member of our team has known Kennedy since 2013. Kennedy was the first to hear about the idea of starting a community project, and when asked if he would like to take on the local leadership, he didn't think twice. With his extraordinary life story—from the streets to leading a social project—he brings a unique perspective to our shared vision. His indomitable will and personal experiences inspire the children we support. He shows them that they, too, can be part of our project, seize the opportunity for an education, and find a way out of poverty. Learn more about Kennedy, whose life stands for resilience, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to helping. In this video, he talks about it personally.

Maureen Njugua - Our Soul Maureen is our on-site social worker and brings incredible spirit and energy to our entire project. Here's her story: "When I was very young, I lost both my parents, an event that shook my world and left me incredibly alone. After my parents' deaths, I was placed in a children's home, where I faced new challenges that life away from my family brought. Despite the overwhelming grief and difficult transition, I found within myself a sense of purpose and resilience. The difficulties I experienced during my time in the children's home instilled in me a deep determination: I wanted to ensure that no child would ever have to suffer the same hardships I did. This determination led me to pursue a career in social work. Becoming a social worker wasn't just a career choice for me; it was a commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable children. I dedicated myself to understanding their needs and advocating for their rights. Every day, I work hard to create better conditions for these children and ensure they receive the support, love, and opportunities they deserve. My journey has given me a unique Perspective and deep empathy for the children I work with. I strive to transform my experiences into positive change and work tirelessly to provide a better future for every child who needs help. My goal is to transform their lives, offer them hope and a brighter path forward, and ensure they feel valued and supported every step of the way.

  • New Roots Watamu School

At our New Roots Watamu School, around 100 children are currently learning in five classrooms – free of charge and with a lot of heart. Many of them couldn't afford to attend a public school. We give them the chance to learn, grow, and believe in themselves. Our offerings are complemented by a small daycare center with eight children, where even the youngest children are encouraged through play and find security. In addition to the lessons, we place great value on personal development, creative expression, and environmental awareness. Every day, all children receive a warm, balanced meal because nutrition is a crucial part of sustainable education. Our school is a place of community where children are seen, supported, and encouraged. We want to grow step by step – so that even more children have access to education and opportunities.

  • New Roots Medical Center

Health is the foundation for education, participation, and a self-determined life. With the New Roots Medical Center, we are creating a place of medical care and trust – right in the heart of our community in Watamu. The center has two treatment rooms and a small pharmacy. Here, a doctor and two nurses take care of the health needs of women, pregnant women, and children – free of charge, discreetly, and professionally. The focus is on regular health checkups, the treatment of common childhood illnesses such as diarrhea, malaria, and infections, as well as comprehensive prenatal care with advice on nutrition and health during pregnancy. In this way, we specifically strengthen the health of mothers and their babies – long before and after birth. Another focus is on vaccinations against preventable diseases such as measles, polio, hepatitis B, and tetanus – a crucial contribution to reducing child mortality and strengthening the entire community. In addition, we offer confidential HIV counseling, education, and medical support – including diagnostics, monitoring, and access to antiretroviral medications. Our goal is to detect the virus early, treat it, and prevent its spread. Surgeries are performed in cooperation with external facilities when necessary—our focus is deliberately on primary medical care and prevention. This Medical Center was made possible through the generous support of a Munich-based management consultancy that shares our vision: Health should not be a privilege. It is a human right.

  • Women Empowerment bei New Roots

Many women in our community face significant challenges: They care not only for their own children, but often also for nieces, nephews, or grandchildren – often all on their own. Some have suffered traumatic experiences such as violence or abuse. With our Women's Empowerment Program, we create a safe space for healing, development, and genuine perspectives. An experienced psychologist offers free counseling sessions for affected women and children – sensitive, professional, and confidential. But empowerment means more to us than support – it means independence. That's why we offer practical training courses where women can learn new skills: tailoring, hairdressing, computer skills, and other qualifications that help them earn their own income and live more independently. We actively involve women in our projects, promote their talents, and make them visible – as pillars of a strong, supportive community. Our goal: to empower women – so they can shape their own future.

  • New Roots Clean & Green - Environmental & Nature Conservation

Watamu is a unique habitat with an impressive diversity of plants and animals, both on land and in the sea. The nearby Mida Creek and the Indian Ocean are home to endangered species such as the green sea turtle, which requires special protection. As New Roots, we are actively committed to preserving this natural environment with regular beach cleanups, mangrove planting campaigns, and educational events. Everyone in the community is welcome to participate! We are particularly proud of our partnership with the organization Local Ocean Conservation, through which we raise awareness of turtle conservation through educational opportunities, observation of nesting sites (where possible), and the protection of the animals from poachers and environmental threats. The collected plastic waste is not simply disposed of: We carefully sort and weigh it, thanks to our collaboration with EcoWorld Recycling in Watamu. Women from the community can bring their recyclable plastic waste to us and receive a small financial reward. This is an important step towards ecological and economic participation. In addition to direct nature conservation, we focus on knowledge transfer and collaborative learning: At all events, experts explain ecological connections, the impact of plastic on marine life, and the importance of sustainable action in everyday life. As a token of appreciation, each participant receives a food package for their family, sufficient for several days. In this way, we combine education, environmental and climate protection with concrete help for everyday life. Our goal: to preserve nature, raise awareness—and build a community of solidarity that works together for a future worth living.

  • New Roots Community

Our community is diverse – and open to everyone. It consists of the children who attend our school and their families. Of mothers, grandparents, aunts, and uncles who work daily to ensure the well-being of our youngest children – often under the most difficult conditions. But also of people who come from far away because they lack support in their local area. Our community also includes our employees, volunteers, partner organizations, and supporters. Everyone who gets involved, helps, or needs help – they all belong. We see our project as an open place of solidarity, where background, income, or social status are irrelevant. Those who are hungry will be fed. Those who want to learn will be supported. Those who want to help are needed. That's why we regularly hold feeding programs where not only our students, but also their families and other people in need receive a warm, nutritious meal and something to drink. New Roots means more than school or medical care – it means community. A community where everyone counts and everyone is welcome.

  • UN WASH Programme

The UN WASH program stands for the global improvement of water, sanitation, and hygiene standards. Its goal is to provide everyone with access to clean drinking water, safe toilet facilities, and basic hygiene education – crucial prerequisites for health, dignity, and social participation. At New Roots, we consistently align ourselves with these international standards. We ensure that our community has access to clean water, uses safe and hygienic sanitation facilities, and is informed about important hygiene topics. This holistic approach plays a significant role in preventing disease, improving well-being, and providing a healthy livelihood for children and adults. Through our commitment to WASH, we are laying an important foundation for sustainable development and improving the quality of life in our community.

  • No help from above - change from within

The challenges that people in Kenya and many other parts of the world face every day are immense: poverty, war, hunger, disease, lack of education. But the potential is just as great if we address them with respect, energy, and genuine participation. With our project, we take responsibility – together with the local people and everyone who supports us. We create spaces for education, medical care, nutrition, and environmental protection. We listen, strengthen from within, and act for the long term. A central component of our approach is that the team in Kenya is led entirely by Kenyans. They share operational responsibility, make decisions, and shape the project according to the needs and values of the local community. We in Germany don't see ourselves as "helpers from outside," but as equal partners. We expressly distance ourselves from any form of so-called white saviorism. Our work is not based on the principle of speaking or acting for others – but on working with people, empowering them, and jointly creating structures that can work and grow from within the community. Despite our different origins, languages, and cultural backgrounds, we work as one team – with mutual respect, a willingness to learn, and the shared goal of enabling sustainable change. It's not about providing short-term assistance – it's about creating real prospects. For children who can go to school. For women who become economically independent. For families who have access to medical care. And for a natural world that is protected, not exploited. We believe that hope is not something that should be left to chance. It arises where people come together, share responsibility, and believe in a common future. New Roots is more than a project. It is a growing promise for dignity, change, and global justice.

This is how everyone can help

Whether through a monetary donation, donations in kind, or sponsorship – every form of support helps us make real change possible. We offer various ways for you to become part of our movement. No matter what you choose, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Thank you for sharing hope with us and taking responsibility.

We use all funding – whether material or financial – transparently and specifically where it is most urgently needed locally. Every contribution makes a difference.

ABOUT NEW ROOTS

  • Holistic for a strong community

New Roots e. V. is committed to creating sustainable living conditions for people in need – with a holistic approach that goes far beyond individual projects. We promote education, provide basic medical care, ensure regular nutrition, and actively engage in environmental and climate protection. Our goal is to open up real prospects and opportunities for families, women, children, and the entire community. We work in partnership, respectfully, and locally anchored to jointly enable sustainable development. New Roots sees itself as a driver of social, ecological, and economic change, empowering people to shape their lives independently. Our work is funded exclusively through donations and membership fees – thus ensuring transparency and maximum impact on the ground.

  • Our drive - Grown from experience and commitment

The idea for New Roots was born out of personal experiences on numerous trips around the world. Getting to know poverty-stricken regions and immersing ourselves deeply in the realities of local life gave us a firsthand experience of the challenges many people face, and sparked the ambition to create something sustainable. Despite these global impressions, it was above all the intensive time in Kenya that had a lasting impact and convinced us: Here we see the opportunity to make a real difference with our own social project and to have a long-term impact. One of our founding members has been active in social projects in Kenya since 2013 and brings this valuable knowledge to our work. Together with other committed members who have gained deep insights through volunteer work, New Roots was born out of the desire to provide locally rooted and sustainable help. Our mission begins in Kenya, but our vision is global. We are open to opportunities to develop further projects where help is needed and where our experience can create real added value. New Roots is a living promise: to enable change together and give people in need a better and independent future.

  • Our goals - creating sustainability and perspectives

Since acquiring our property in Watamu in 2021, we have been working tirelessly to create a sustainable foundation for a strong community. Today, we teach over 100 children in five classrooms and also run a small daycare center. The goal is to ensure they receive sufficient food every day, learn in a safe environment, and continue to grow the school. But this is just the beginning. Our vision goes beyond this: We dream of building a New Roots Guesthouse—a place where helpers, experts, and supporters are welcome. This house will not only provide accommodation but also serve as a vibrant space where guests can actively and voluntarily participate in our educational, environmental, and social projects. The income from the New Roots Guesthouse will be used to secure funding for our projects while creating urgently needed local jobs. We also continue to invest in our medical care and women's empowerment programs, are committed to environmental protection, and promote economic independence through practical training. Our long-term goal is to establish the holistic New Roots approach worldwide – in other countries and regions where people need support. We remain true to our values: locally rooted, managed in partnerships, and committed to bringing about sustainable change. New Roots aims to be more than just a project, but a growing network that connects people, creates opportunities, and together shapes a better future.

Guidelines for our work with children: The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child for the protection of children worldwide. The rules of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child apply to all children worldwide – regardless of gender, location, skin color, or religion. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted by the United Nations in 1989, places an important focus on the needs and interests of children, such as the right to a violence-free home and the right to education. Our association, New Roots eV, shares this view, and based on these guidelines, we want to guarantee the protection and care of all children with our project so that they can develop healthily and fully.
